What Not To Do
Ah, man. Christina Aguilera’s comeback is looking less and less… Just less. From her singles, to her sexually provocative dancing, to soft porn like music videos, to her style of dress. There’s nothing fresh about her new direction, and her recent look while performing on the Today Show yesterday put the stamp on her semi-menopausal, apparent mid-life crisis:

I see a lot of people doing the shorts-over-tights thing, and it hasn’t looked good on ONE person, ever. It’s very unbecoming, unflattering, and 6th grade. If you’re not an OMG Girl (#shouts to Tiny & Toya) then you probably shouldn’t be wearing shorts over your leggings. Studded leggings at that. But because I’m all about solutions, and hate to just say “that’s whack, don’t do that again!” without an alternative in site, I am offering you up some alternatives and advice.

Men Style,
Summer Time,
What Not To Do
Yes, us ladies have our “oh no she didn’t come out her house and think that was cute” moments, but you guys are habitual line steppers when it comes to what not to wear. Here’s a few things I don’t want to see this summer at all:
ED HARDY:

Unless Christian Audigier is cutting you thick checks to wear Ed Hardy, this is definitely at the top of the list for what not to wear. The graphic t-shirt thing is so 5 years ago, so unless you’re the newest cast member on Jersey Shore, don’t do it!
WALLET CHAINS:

I don’t want to hear any excuses, no justifying its convenience, just don’t do it. Okay? Unless you’re going through an Usher-esque mid-life crisis, this is not okay.
SUNGLASSES IN THE CLUB:

I don’t care who you are, what the occasion is, or what you do for a living. I’ve seen this one too many times and it’s not attractive, not to mention it’s a safety hazard. Now you’re risking spilling a drink on a young ladies dress who has to return it in the morning- now she can’t get her money back.

“She insists she got more class, we know”- Drake

LADIES: I will say this once, and be very clear: IT IS NOT OKAY TO WALK OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOUSE IN A MINI THIS, WELL, MINI! Rosa Acosta, who is a video vixen, stepped out to an event recently rocking a super mini one sleeve dress that had me looking at the screen like “oh, for real?” I just can’t wrap my mind around the fact that some women don’t get it. Understand, when a woman is sexy she doesn’t have to try too hard. Sex appeal oozes from your pores, even when in a potato sack! Some have it, some don’t- but never, ever try too hard. Here are some alternatives:

Camilla and Marc Alexander Frock Embellished Dress $550
Your dress should never be too short, ever. If you can’t bend over to pick up your lipgloss that fell, without your kitty cat peeking from it’s porch, you just can’t. Sorry, I don’t make the rules. Try something that’s short, and sexy, but still has a sense of sophistication and mystique. People should never know EXACTLY what you’re working with! Keep ‘em guessing, girl!

Maison Martin Margiela Sleeveless Crepe Mini Dress $750
This little lady right here is right up my alley! This is definitely something I would rock- sexy, but still discreet. You never want to give too much away, like I said. With this, you can show off your legs, it’s a perfect length, and the fit will hug any set of curves. Read more…

It’s never okay to wear a fanny pack. Ever. No. I don’t care who you are.

Rihanna was spotted leaving her London hotel yesterday, after a long night of celebrating her Nokia concert the previous night, rocking an H&M knitted dress with puff shoulders, boots, rose gold linked chain, and a Louis Vuitton fanny pack. This isn’t okay, people. Not if you’re Rihanna, and not if it’s Louis Vuitton.
As always with my “What Not To Do’s”, I offer up to 5 solutions. I understand the freedom a fanny pack gives you, you can store your most prized and necessary belongings without having to actually hold a bag in your hand or on your arm all day. So if you are simply looking for that freedom, I have found some solutions for you. A fanny pack though? C’mon son!
The perfect solution to the freedom giving fanny pack, is the shoulder bag. You can either rock it by simply throwing it on your shoulder, or you can throw it across your body:

As I was going through the pictures for the Hip-Hop Honor’s that recently passed in WireImage, trying to find close-ups of the shades Ashanti was wearing, I noticed something wasn’t right with Un-Foxy Brown:

Un-Foxy committed one of the biggest faux pas you could ever commit! Usually this faux pas only occurs in the ‘hood, unless weaving and bonding has become a big boom in the suburbs and I didn’t know. With all the advancements in technology, and the different textures and styles of hair on the market, I just don’t get why this would still be happening.
Now, I’m no expert on hair, but it looks like her natural hair texture is Kanekalon Jumbo Braid Hair and the weave she is wearing is Indian Remy, which is about $100+ a pound/pack. This is a big, big mistake ladies! You just don’t do this, and there’s no excuse as to why it should happen, it doesn’t take a life coach and psychologist for us to know the texture of our hair. Party & Bullshit,
What Not To Do
Okay, so you guys know how big of a fan I am of Rihanna’s style, but that doesn’t mean she can do no wrong in my eyes. She recently hit up a 4th of July party in Las Vegas thrown by her “big brother” Jay-Z wearing sequenced pants, a black blazer with pasties underneath her blazer:

Why is this wrong? Well, it’s just too much. I understand it’s her “thing”, but pasties on your nipples with your breast on display for the world to see. NO! I guess cleavage bearing corsets weren’t enough. It’s one thing to be proud of your teta’s and wanting to show them off to the world (personally, I LOVE my boobies! And my cleavage game is mean, if I do say so myself), but there are ways to go about it.

Mariah Carey stepped out on Easter in a pink ruffled dress that just screamed “Oh no!” in all the right ways. Even Mimi herself admitted to the dress being a hell no:

Why is this dress wrong? Well, there are simply too many ruffles! If Mariah was 12, this would have been perfect for Easter, but she’s 40. Ruffles are very much in, and I am a big fan of ruffles myself, however they should stay in one place. And as usual, because I’m all about solutions, I have found substitutes for the horizontally ruffled dress:

T-Bags Asymmetric ruffle mini dress $185, Net-A-Porter
I never want to take someone out their comfort zone when it comes to styling. If ruffles is your thing, fine let’s do it! But let’s do it the right way. With this ruffled dress, there are 2 layers of ruffles and the asymmetry neckline, that sits on top of the bust, adds volume and body to the ruffles.

Thread Social Ruffle jersey dress $610, Net-A-Porter
Another case of the layered ruffles, if you want to add volume to a small hip or butt area the layered ruffle-skirt is the perfect thing for you! This dress has the youthful element that Mariah strives for every time she dresses, so this way she can be young & chic at the same time!

French Connection Ruffle Dress $69.55, ASOS
These soft full layered ruffles fixes Mimi’s multiple ruffle fix! The silky soft fabric allows the ruffles to drape the body the right way, and it will fall over the curves perfectly!

Trends,
What Not To Do
This trend seems to be getting popular by the day, and it needs to stop before it gets out of hand:

Rihanna first sported the trend with smiley faces on her nails in December at an event in London, England. Then Heidi Montag decided to hop on the band wagon with the Chanel logo on her nails recently while shopping it up at none other then Chanel.
3 reasons why it’s wrong:
1. It’s tacky, and depending on the logo (i.e. designers such as Gucci, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, etc.)– ghetto!
2. It’s immature, although some may prefer the phrase youthful
3. It’s whack! Period.
Because I’m all about solutions, here is a better alternative for the funky fashionista that likes to play with nails: Read more…

Okay, I know it always seems like I’m picking on Brandy and her fashion choices, but either her or her stylist need to get it together:

There is just all kinds of wrong going on in this picture. For one, that is too much brown. A brown sweater, brown boots and brown bag. A contrast color such as black would have looked good against the overwhelming shade. Another no-no, the matching Louis Vuitton bags and boots. I am not a big fan of monogram anything, especially boots. If she was going to wear a monogrammed Louis bag- fine. Almost everything Louis is monogrammed anyway. But matching boots?? Just simply too much at once.
I think the overall look screams “look at me, I’m wearing Louis. You know what that means? I can afford it
”. There is just too much labels in this look, and you have to remember, when wearing labels never over do it. If you have a monogram bag, everything else should be solid, or printed depending on your style. If you’re wearing a brocade jacket, no monogram LV.
Keep it at a minimum, never over do it. Here’s what should have been done:

With this look she could have kept the brown effect she had going on, while offsetting it with the ivory dress so it won’t be overwhelming. Also, the monogram LV bag flirts with the glasses a little with the same print/monogram effect. Being that sunglasses are such a small, but still statement making accessory, it doesn’t take away too much attention from or compete with the handbag. The layered dress and the knee-high boots will keep her stylishly warm in the cool Beverly Hills weather, while the over sized sunglasses adds another kind of cool.
Dress: Halston Top silk blend dress $1,995, Net-A-Porter
Boots: Marni Open toe boots $1,070, Net-A-Porter
Bag: Louis Vuitton Monogram Mini Lin Speedy 30 $775, eLuxury
Glasses: Chloe Myrte oversized sunglasses $290, Net-A-Porter

Ladies, there are certain ways to do certain things. And this is NOT how you do torn jeans (or distressed anything for that matter):

Brandy stepped out in L.A. this week to run some errands and thought that ripping a big hole on the thighs of her True Religion jeans was a bright idea. Or maybe we should blame the stylist, after all– these stars don’t dress them selves! While I am a big fan of distressed style jeans, I wouldn’t do this nor would I recommend it. Before I go into what I would recommend, check out stars who rocked a similar style but in the right way:

Rihanna got into the distressed vibe when she turned up her shorts and pulled down the pockets, exposing them and pairing them with a top that extends beyond the end of the shorts. Anything unstructured always works (well not always) in fashion.

Rachel Bilson rocked a distressed style boyfriend jeans. The loose fit of the jeans was perfect for the style. The cuts in her jeans was small, and that’s where Brandy went wrong. Her holes were too big and the jeans was tight, which pushed out the lining of the tear making it look tacky.

Zoe Kravitz rocked distressed shorts and paired it with a distressed style cowboy boots. The loose strings at the end give it a rocker vibe without saying “I though hard about this one”. Distressed is very tricky and can easily go wrong, so you can’t think too hard. Like Nike said, “Just do it!”
I recommend:

1. Pratt’s Oil Spill Norton Motorcross $198, Chick Downtown
2. The Unknown Factory Used Light Skinny Biker $198, Chick Downtown
3. What Comes Around Goes Around Vintage Boyfriend Jean $195, Chick Downtown [Online Exclusive! And the baggy "boyfriend" fit can add a little swag, although my philosophy on swag is "either you got it or you don't!"]
4. Tristen Destroyed Boot $99.50, Abercrombie & Fitch
Abercrombie & Fitch is the perfect go to place if you want this look, that’s their “signature”. Diesel is another good place to get it, although they have been leaning more towards a “clean” look as of late.
