What They Should've Worn: 2009 AMA's

The red carpet for last night’s American Music Awards was just like the show– overall boring, with a few good moments. Emphasis on few. For the looks I didn’t like or thought was mediocre, I made over. Y’all know how I feel about solutions: if you don’t have a solution to the problem, don’t complain about it. Simple.

I never thought I would have to do this with my girl Rih Rih! But this Marchesa rosette cut-out dress was wrong (sorry Mariel). For her fix, I chose a dress from the same Marchesa Spring 2010 collection. This strapless short dress, with sculpted bust and waist detail would have looked stunning on Rihanna! And the white fabric dripping would have given her the spunk she goes for all the time. Yes!

While the Versace dress Shakira rocked was cute, flirty and sexy, I am tired of this look on Shakira! Every awards show, it never fails, the same strapless mini dress, just in a different color. I chose this Roberto Cavalli Eyelet-Embellished Dress for her because it was sexy, funky, but still fresh and new. With the cutout neck, asymmetric peaked hem at front, and diagonal pleat seam, Shakira would have successfully pulled off the same look she was going for with this mini dress- just better! She could throw these on with thigh high boots for an even sexier look, or rock pumps to keep the focus on the dress!

I never want to take someone out of their element. Obviously Kelly Clarkson was going for the in-season sequined/embellishment trend, she just went about it the wrong way. Looks like her grandma made it for her, and she didn’t want to tell her no. To fix this I chose this 3.1 Phillip Lim Sequined Silk Wrap Dress, which is still fun and young, but still conservative in a way. This dress would have also flattered her body better, as opposed to highlighting where she is more *voluptuous*. She could have paired this with a pair of black pumps, even the pumps she wore with her dress!

What Not To Do: Mariah's Ruffled Dress

Posted by Tara Decoda on Apr 20, 2009 in Candids, Celebs, Fashion Dont's, What Not To Do

Mariah Carey stepped out on Easter in a pink ruffled dress that just screamed “Oh no!” in all the right ways. Even Mimi herself admitted to the dress being a hell no:

nariah

Why is this dress wrong? Well, there are simply too many ruffles! If Mariah was 12, this would have been perfect for Easter, but she’s 40. Ruffles are very much in, and I am a big fan of ruffles myself, however they should stay in one place. And as usual, because I’m all about solutions, I have found substitutes for the horizontally ruffled dress:

T-Bags Asymmetric ruffle mini dress $185, Net-A-Porter

I never want to take someone out their comfort zone when it comes to styling. If ruffles is your thing, fine let’s do it! But let’s do it the right way. With this ruffled dress, there are 2 layers of ruffles and the asymmetry neckline, that sits on top of the bust, adds volume and body to the ruffles.

Thread Social Ruffle jersey dress $610, Net-A-Porter

Another case of the layered ruffles, if you want to add volume to a small hip or butt area the layered ruffle-skirt is the perfect thing for you! This dress has the youthful element that Mariah strives for every time she dresses, so this way she can be young & chic at the same time!

French Connection Ruffle Dress $69.55, ASOS

These soft full layered ruffles fixes Mimi’s multiple ruffle fix! The silky soft fabric allows the ruffles to drape the body the right way, and it will fall over the curves perfectly!

What They Should've Worn: 2009 Grammys

Because I am all about solutions, and I love giving people makeovers, I bring to you again: What They Should’ve Wore- Grammy Edition:

1. Leona Lewis

leonal

What was wrong with this picture? Well, this ill-fitting nude gown, blonde hair and tan skin was just a tad too much. Now don’t get it twisted, she should very well pull out all stops because she was a nominee and have every right to. But perhaps this Oscar de la Renta dress and shoes, and Kenneth Jay Lane collar necklace would have done the trick. Perhaps a bun too, we’ve never seen that on Leona. This outfit is fit for a nominee and the pulled up style on the leg would have added an element of sexy-ness to the usually boring Leona. This would have definitely turned heads. Problem solved.

2. Keyshia Cole

keyshiac

What was wrong with this picture? Well, this half mini-dress/half sheer gown pressing against her breasts was just not poppin’! Keyshia is just all too fabulous for this. This Tadashi gown with the split up the leg would have gave her the element of class and surprise she was obviously going for, and it wouldn’t surpress her breast neither. It would have done the job of balancing out her figure that she always seem to miss. The Giuseppe Zanotti fishbone sandals would have been the best part of the slit, and the ring with crystals around it and black stone in the middle would have summed up the black and silver theme.

3. Solange Knowles

solangek

What was wrong with this picture? Well, that dress did nothing for her body and it wasn’t Grammy appropriate. This Tibi dress is playful and bright, which is much of what Solange has made her signature. The ruffles going down the center and sheer sleeves would have been beautiful against her skin and complimented her style. Silver wasn’t even an option for this look so of course it was paired with gold Jimmy Choo’s and gold Leiber clutch with pinkish stones all over.

4. Paris Hilton

parish

What was wrong with this picture? Where should we start…. the outdated Versace dress? Or just the fact that she forgot she was at the Grammys? Whatever reason you want to start with, this Temperley London 20’s inspired mini dress with the fringed bottom solves the problem. It allows Paris to keep the mini-dress party girl look she was going for, but just a lot more Grammy appropriate. And not to mention the Givenchy sandals adds a pop of color and some edge. Now, THAT’s hot!

What Not To Do: Logo Nails

Posted by Tara Decoda on Jan 8, 2009 in Celebs, Fashion Dont's, Trends, What Not To Do

This trend seems to be getting popular by the day, and it needs to stop before it gets out of hand:

logonails

Rihanna first sported the trend with smiley faces on her nails in December at an event in London, England. Then Heidi Montag decided to hop on the band wagon with the Chanel logo on her nails recently while shopping it up at none other then Chanel.

3 reasons why it’s wrong:

1. It’s tacky, and depending on the logo (i.e. designers such as Gucci, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, etc.)– ghetto!

2. It’s immature, although some may prefer the phrase youthful

3. It’s whack! Period.

Because I’m all about solutions, here is a better alternative for the funky fashionista that likes to play with nails: Read more…

What Not To Do: Matching Boots & Bag

Posted by Tara Decoda on Dec 30, 2008 in Candids, Celebs, Designers, Fashion Dont's, High-End, What Not To Do

Okay, I know it always seems like I’m picking on Brandy and her fashion choices, but either her or her stylist need to get it together:

Brandy Returning Shoes At Gucci (USA AND CANADA ONLY)

There is just all kinds of wrong going on in this picture. For one, that is too much brown. A brown sweater, brown boots and brown bag. A contrast color such as black would have looked good against the overwhelming shade. Another no-no, the matching Louis Vuitton bags and boots. I am not a big fan of monogram anything, especially boots. If she was going to wear a monogrammed Louis bag- fine. Almost everything Louis is monogrammed anyway. But matching boots?? Just simply too much at once.

I think the overall look screams “look at me, I’m wearing Louis. You know what that means? I can afford it :-P ”. There is just too much labels in this look, and you have to remember, when wearing labels never over do it. If you have a monogram bag, everything else should be solid, or printed depending on your style. If you’re wearing a brocade jacket, no monogram LV.

Keep it at a minimum, never over do it. Here’s what should have been done:

fotoflexer_photo7

With this look she could have kept the brown effect she had going on, while offsetting it with the ivory dress so it won’t be overwhelming. Also, the monogram LV bag flirts with the glasses a little with the same print/monogram effect. Being that sunglasses are such a small, but still statement making accessory, it doesn’t take away too much attention from or compete with the handbag. The layered dress and the knee-high boots will keep her stylishly warm in the cool Beverly Hills weather, while the over sized sunglasses adds another kind of cool.

Dress: Halston Top silk blend dress $1,995, Net-A-Porter

Boots: Marni Open toe boots $1,070, Net-A-Porter

Bag: Louis Vuitton Monogram Mini Lin Speedy 30 $775, eLuxury

Glasses: Chloe Myrte oversized sunglasses $290, Net-A-Porter

What Not To Do: Brandy's Torn Jeans

Posted by Tara Decoda on Nov 20, 2008 in Celebs, Fashion Dont's, What Not To Do

Ladies, there are certain ways to do certain things. And this is NOT how you do torn jeans (or distressed anything for that matter):

brandy-torn-jeans

Brandy stepped out in L.A. this week to run some errands and thought that ripping a big hole on the thighs of her True Religion jeans was a bright idea. Or maybe we should blame the stylist, after all– these stars don’t dress them selves! While I am a big fan of distressed style jeans, I wouldn’t do this nor would I recommend it. Before I go into what I would recommend, check out stars who rocked a similar style but in the right way:

SPL54550_006

Rihanna got into the distressed vibe when she turned up her shorts and pulled down the pockets, exposing them and pairing them with a top that extends beyond the end of the shorts. Anything unstructured always works (well not always) in fashion.

rachel-bilson-boyfriend-jeans

Rachel Bilson rocked a distressed style boyfriend jeans. The loose fit of the jeans was perfect for the style. The cuts in her jeans was small, and that’s where Brandy went wrong. Her holes were too big and the jeans was tight, which pushed out the lining of the tear making it look tacky.

zoe-kravitz-out-in-l8ed66b

Zoe Kravitz rocked distressed shorts and paired it with a distressed style cowboy boots. The loose strings at the end give it a rocker vibe without saying “I though hard about this one”. Distressed is very tricky and can easily go wrong, so you can’t think too hard. Like Nike said, “Just do it!”

I recommend:

fotoflexer_photo7

1. Pratt’s Oil Spill Norton Motorcross $198, Chick Downtown

2. The Unknown Factory Used Light Skinny Biker $198, Chick Downtown

3. What Comes Around Goes Around Vintage Boyfriend Jean $195, Chick Downtown [Online Exclusive! And the baggy "boyfriend" fit can add a little swag, although my philosophy on swag is "either you got it or you don't!"]

4. Tristen Destroyed Boot $99.50, Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch is the perfect go to place if you want this look, that’s their “signature”. Diesel is another good place to get it, although they have been leaning more towards a “clean” look as of late.

Best & Worst Dressed @ 60th Primetime Emmy Awards

Posted by Tara Decoda on Sep 23, 2008 in Award Shows, Celebs, Fashion Dont's, High-End, Red Carpet Style, That's A Good Look

At every red carpet event, there is the good, the bad and the ugly. Some people try too hard, some don’t try hard enough while some is just effortless. Lets start this post off on a good note:

My picks for Best Dressed are Heidi Klum (in Armani Prive), Nicolette Sheridan (in custom made Angel Sanchez & the color of the season) and Brooke Shields (in Badgley Mischka). All these ladies worked it. As they say, “I’ve got some good news and I’ve got some bad news”. The bad news:

Kate Walsh (in Zuhair Murad), Jennifer Love Hewitt (in Carolina Herrera) and Kathy Griffin (in Who the hell knows??) all looked terrible. If it’s not ill-fitting, it’s bad color, if it’s not bad color it’s a bad fit. I mean, they all just went wrong in every possible department.

There you have it… my best and worst. I’ll be back with the most popular colors & designers of the evening.

What They Should've Worn: Fashion Rocks 2008

Posted by Tara Decoda on Sep 6, 2008 in Celebs, Designers, Fashion Dont's, Red Carpet Style, What They Should've Worn

So every time we (fashion bloggers) do red carpet coverage and we choose the HIT’s and MISSES, basically what we are doing is complaining right? So for all the MISSES or poor outfit choices from the 5th Annual Fashion Rocks event, I have for you: ”What They Should’ve Wore” because I’m about solutions (and not to mention this sh** is fun):

Leona Lewis definitely got a MISS from me, so for her solution I have a Matthew Willamson Albertine Floral dress paired with a pair of Christian Louboutin Satin Platform Sandals. With the colors on the dress dancing on a black background, the pink sandals were a perfect fit. Not to mention her figure would have filled out that dress.

Although Keyshia Cole was a HIT in my book, the dress she wore was not for Fashion Rocks! For her solution I have a Roberto Cavalli Silk one-shoulder dress paired with a pair of Jimmy Choo Elipse Leather Sandals. The dress will allow her to still show skin, because the belly skin was not right for the event. The gold sandals have enough pizazz but it still allows the busy dress to have the spotlight.

Ashanti looked a little too bedazzled and low budget, and the sides out were a no-no. For her solution, I have a Marchesa Ruffle Bustier Dress and paired it with a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti Ankle Strap Pumps. The ruffles on the dress would fill out her chest area and the rest of the dress would hug her body and she will fill that out. For the shoes, I needed an ankle strap. A thin shoe would have done nothing for her, because she is so thick.

Nicole Scherzinger was an all around MISS for me. She showed up looking like a high fashion belly dancer. So for her solution, I chose a 3.1. Phillip Lim Silk Layered Tank Gown and being that you won’t even see the shoes, I focused on accessories. No bracelets, being that the dress already has a lot going on but you definitely don’t want to leave that area naked. I paired it with a Bijoux Heart Whiplash embellished ring. The dress allows her to keep that silk, draped look she has going on but just a little more polished and the ring is the cherry on top. The color of the dress is also not too dark, so her hair would fall on it and still not get lost.

Style Overload

Posted by Tara Decoda on Aug 28, 2008 in Celebs, Fashion Dont's

Seriously.

This is definitely too much at one time. The fringe bag, the Gucci Babouska boots, the name chain AND thick chain. You definitely don’t want to overload on trends or styles. She could have kept on just the name chain and left the other one at home if her bag & shoes would have been so dramatic. The fringe bag is just in time for Fall, but the fringe on the bag is super long and very dramatic, after choosing that accessory she should have left everything else alone and let the bag take charge of the outfit. The boots are perfect and a must cop for this season but AGAIN, it’s competing for attention with the rest of the outfit! Everything here is screaming “Look at me!” which is never good. Something should have took center stage, not everyone can be a lead… right Melody?

Ladies, learn from her mistake.

Ashanti Needs To Fire Her Stylist (or get one)

Posted by Tara Decoda on Aug 28, 2008 in Celebs, Fashion Dont's, Performances/Concerts

Ashanti has been making all the wrong choices when it comes to fashion as of late, her latest being her outfit she wore while performing at The Grove in LA. This is the straw that broke the camel’s back:

I am about sick and tired of this Sugar.Honey.Ice.Tea. Ashanti, if you see this, can you have your people call my people? I will hook you up! Or you can just call June Ambrose, whichever one of us works for you.
